WIRELESS COMES WITH A PRICE

With new technology, we now see the number of wireless
applications exploding. For instance, you can use a
wireless laptop computer, taking it from room to room
within signal range of a router, working wire free.
The basic concept of "wireless" has been around for some
time. Look at the remote control for the television. It
used to be that to turn the television on or off, you had
to stand up, walk to the television, and manually make
adjustments.

The cell phone is the most widely used wireless device on
the planet today. Every where you go you see people using
their cell phones and it makes one wonder how in the world
did we ever get by before the cell phone. Without being tied
to anything, people can use them where ever they go, and
whenever they have something to say to another person.
Now we have the wireless network, which has really improved
the office work force. Now businesses can share fax,
Internet, printers and scanners with each other, all
wireless.

Although all this wireless-ness has made our lives easier
and more economical, it does come with a price. Wireless
networks are easy targets for those who know the system
and want to use it for unlawful purposes. High speed
Internet access is great and we love to use it, and in all
fairness, these networks back up their connections with
good security services of an Internet Center, which houses
an infrastructure. This also allows smaller businesses to
stay competitive without having to spend their money on
expensive equipment.

The wireless experts are working hard everyday to improve
their wireless technology to ensure their customers
security. However, the problem with the Wireless Equivalent
Privacy or WEP encryption that's built into wireless, is
that it can be broken into pretty easily. Today, computer
hackers are finding new ways to steal people's identities.

Insertion attack, is were an unauthorized device is placed
on a wireless network and getting online without permission
through the proper channels. This is a big problem in the
world of wireless Internet today, if your getting service
but not paying for this service, then it's considered
stealing. Intercepting and monitoring traffic on a wireless
network is another big problem, and this in itself is
illegal also.

Finally, jamming attacks are also easy in which legitimate
information cannot reach the access point or client since
traffic begins to jam or overwhelm frequencies. While we
have come a long way in the world of wireless and much
more is to come, it makes us understand that we are still
vulnerable in many ways.
