Take A Family Fishing Trip
by Ssende Kundgie

We seem to have lost the connection with the great outdoors
and the many rewarding pastimes it offers because there are
so many urban distractions in today's age. Daily, mundane
activities keep most families so preoccupied that they have
little quality time to spend on family activities. Next time
you get a free afternoon or weekend, do not just while it
away in front of the television or at the shopping mall or
movies. Instead, take your whole family along for a
refreshing trip to the local lake, pond or river and go
fishing! The great thing about fishing is all age groups can
participate. Even little kids can be taught how to cast a
line and older members of the family can be included because
it is not too strenuous an activity. So, no one needs to be
left out!

An old-fashioned fishing trip is light on the budget
compared to the more expensive alternatives such as taking
the family to a theme park or an amusement park. The price
of a fishing trip is reasonable, often a few dollars for the
appropriate permits, bait, and equipment. And, in case you
do not want to invest in your own rod and reel, there are
many sporting good stores, bait shops, and general stores
that will be more than happy to rent you and your family the
necessary equipment.

Fishing trips are not just about catching fish! Fishing
allows you a lot of free time between casts and reeling in
fish. You can use this time to chat with family members ad
catch up with each other. There is no better time to get
talking to your child and find out his or her dreams, hopes,
interests and expectations in a relaxed atmosphere.

You may be surprised at what you learn about your own child
and how little you actually knew him or her before you
started communicating. Fishing is great family time. A time
to sing songs together, play games and exchange stories. And
what better way to teach your children about nature, animals
and plants? A child needs to learn about and experience
nature when he is small so that he will continue to respect
nature as an adult. Fishing will give you the opportunity to
make new family rules and dedications about making a
difference to the environment.

When your child returns to school, he or she is sure to be
the envy of their class when the fishing trip is described.
Between the typical fishing tales of 'the one that got
away' and all the old fashioned family fun, everyone is
sure to want to take a fishing trip. Do not forget the
tasty result of any good trip, a dinner of fresh fish! But
you will soon find that even if you only catch an old boot,
any excuse to spend time together as a family is a genuine
success.
