Importance of Hunting Safety

People of all ages find hunting a pleasurable sporting
activity. Hunting has noticeably changed over the ages and
become a sport. Though early man would hunt for food for his
survival needs, most people today hunt to enjoy the sporting
aspect. There are people who hunt for the pleasure of dining
on the bagged animal whereas others want to take back a
trophy that they can display proudly on their walls.
Whatever your reason for hunting, you must ensure that you
follow safety rules. Each year, needless accidents including
fatal ones are caused due to lack of safety while hunting.
Make sure you do not become another statistic! Knowledge of
safety rules can literally save your life!

Some of the states are doing what they can to ensure that
licenses are granted only after the person has attended some
mandatory classes. However, this applies normally only to
underage hunters and leaves out the experienced hunters who
need to be reeducated. Experienced hunters can get
complacent and make mistakes too! Even a small error can be
potentially disastrous. It is advisable for everyone,
regardless of their age, to attend a refresher safety course
before getting a hunting license.

The foremost thing to ensure is the state of your hunting
equipment. Whatever your weapon of choice, be it a rifle,
shotgun or bow and arrow, make sure you keep your equipment
in the best shape possible. Before starting off on a hunting
expedition, thoroughly check all the items you will be
taking with you. Oil all equipment properly and make sure
it is in good working order. Clothing is another important
thing to take care of. A hunting wardrobe has to include a
hat and vest made of visible fabric, so that other hunters
can see you in a distance. For best visual recognition, a
bright orange material with reflective quality is preferred
by most hunters.

Also, make sure your clothing is right for the weather and
conditions. Not all accidents from hunting result because of
weapons. Many of them can be avoided if you wear the right
attire and ensure your shoes are of good quality and will be
able to support you through the trip.

Hunting safety is critical to youngsters. If you plan to go
hunting with your children, emphasize the importance of
safety. Enroll yourself and your child in safety classes,
even if the class is not mandatory. Remember, children learn
by watching others, so you need to be well versed in hunting
safety and practice safety measures when hunting. If you
show respect for the rules, your children will do likewise.
